Sense of Place III:  A Question of Sustainability

 

Class Overview

 This class will serve as an introduction to the problems facing Florida's wetlands.  Both readings and field trip assignments will familiarize students with the importance of protecting these fragile environments.

Readings		 Web Readings:

The Life & Work of Aldo Leopold (Thoroughly review all the sites on the attached page)

Saving Wetlands: A Guide to Action in Florida. When you get to this site you will find a query box that you will type "saving wetlands" into.  It will then take you to a listing of topics, the first of which is identified as "Saving Wetlands."  This caption is contained within a blue shaded area.  Click on "Saving Wetlands" and this will take you to the reading.  This site will take you to this remarkable book provided by the National Audubon Society.  Read chapters 1, 2, & 3.

Writing
Assignment		 Your writing assignment is being reviewed. You will receive comments from Dr. Wimberley within the next two weeks.

Click the icon for information on Writing Assignment # 3 which is due Session 8.

  2. Identify 6 ways in which wetlands have been altered and destroyed.
  3. How is a wetland defined?
  4. Identify and briefly describe the various types and classes of wetlands to be found in Florida.
  5. What factors contribute to wetland diversity and maintenance?
  6. Identify 6 functions of wetlands.
  7. From Chapter 3, describe a Cypress Swamp, a Wet Prairie, & a Mangrove Swamp.
  8. Briefly introduce the class to Aldo Leopold.
  9. How is his work being continued?
  10. How does his "land ethic" work to redefine the nontion of "community?'
  11. In what way doe Leopold criticize the "conservation" movement of his time?

Suggestions: Discuss Leopold "a system of conservation based solely on economic self-interest is hopelessly lopsided."
Field Trip
Field Trip		 Field trip # 3 . Click here information on the objectives of this field trip. Post your field trip report to the Web Board when you complete your field trip.

Journal Writing		  Journals due for review during the week of Session 8. You should going to some wetland area this week.   You might want to include in your journal not only what you see on your trip, but how you went about selecting and arriving at the site that ultimately became your wetland field trip site.

Final Project		  If you have not completed your final project selection then contact your instructor right away
