Reminder:

When adding numbers with the SAME sign (Like signs), ADD the absolute value of the numbers. The sum has the same sign as the numbers being added.

-2 + (-9) = - 2 - 9 = -(2 + 9) = -11

When adding numbers with different signs (unlike signs), Subtract the smaller absolute value from the larger absolute value. The result is given the sign of the larger absolute value.

7 + (-4) = 7 - 4 = 3 (7-4=-4+7)
- 8 + 12 = 12 - 8 = 4

Properties of Real Numbers:

If a,b,c are Real Numbers then,

a) Commutative Property of Addition and Multiplication:
a + b = b + a
ab = ba

b) Associative Property of Addition and multiplication:
(a + b) + c = a + (b + c)
(ab)c = a(bc)

c) Distributive Property of Multiplication over Addition:
a(b + c) = ab + ac

General Study Tips

Remember to review later at home the concepts learned in class and DO the exercises again (at least one more time) to reinforce the skills necessary to continue with other type of exercises.

Another important place you can go is to your School or Public Library and find out about resources on Algebra books. There are a wide variety of Algebra books which will show you concepts and definitions learned in MAT 0024 / MAT 1033 and you can use them as support or reference to improve your Math skills and knowledge.
