Activity #17
BSC 1086C Human Anatomy & Physiology II

"Pete -- the Pathogen"

Area of Study
    The Lymphatic System and Immunity
Learning Objectives
    1. Identify the major components of the lymphatic system, and explain their functions.
    2. Discuss the importance of lymphocytes, and describe their distribution in the body.
    3. Describe the structure of lymphoid tissues and organs, and explain their functions.
    4. List the body’s non-specific defenses, and describe the components and mechanisms of each.

This assignment will be completed in groups of two.  You will be assigned a region of the lymphatic system anatomy from the following list:

      1. Lymph vessels

      2. Lymph nodes

      3. Tonsils

      4. Spleen

      5. Thoracic Duct

      6. GALT

The area is invaded by Peter the Pathogen. Create a story to describe Peter’s experiences in your area of the Lymphatic system.  You may add new characters based on the physiological processes that fight the pathogen. Be sure to include the activities of the non-specific defenses that would be activated as well as representing a characterization of the physical space. Finally, if your area of the lymphatic system cannot eliminate the pathogen, describe what might occur in the body.

Your story will be evaluated based on:

      1. plot

      2. characters

      3. conflict

      4. ending

      5. accuracy of anatomical and physiological metaphors

A story (in written form) that will be shared to the class.
