BSC 1086C Human Anatomy & Physiology II

"My Favorite Poison"

Area of Study
    The Renal System
Learning Objectives
    1. Describe how urinalysis is used as a diagnostic tool.
    2. Demonstrate one method of conducting a urinalysis
Part A
You will be given 4 samples of urine to analyze. The analysis will be conducted using a standard "test strip" color change tests. The tests are sensitive for ketones, glucose, Protein and pH. Once the stick is dipped into the urine sample, wait 60 seconds and then comapre the color change to the standards on the container. Record the result for component tested.

Patient #1

With only the results of the urinalysis above, what would you speculate to be the patient’s problem?  What other information would you want to confirm this?

Patient #2

Sally is an 80 year old female. She lives alone, and has no family to assist her. She has several medical problems, but she has been a good patient who takes her medication and cares for herself fairly well. On a routine check-up she complains of frequent urination. Using the results of her urinalysis what do you suspect is going on? What further questions would you ask? What further tests would you recommend?

Patient #3

Sammy is a 3 year old child.  His mother brought him to the doctor because Sammy has the "flu".  He has had a fever greater than 101 degrees F for the past two days.  He has been vomiting.  The mother explains that Sammy urinates frequently.  He has "peed" the bed several times in the past week.  Sammy has been drinking constantly—which she tried to slow down, but he is constantly thirsty.  Using his test results, make a tentative diagnosis of Sammy’s problem.  What other tests would you recommend?

Patient #4

Tammy presents to the doctor because she feels nauseated.  She has not run a fever, but she is very tired.  The first day of her last menstrual cycle was 45 days ago.  The doctor completes a urinalysis and gets the above results.  What might you diagnose?  What other tests would you recommend?

Each autonomic event and reaction should be paired up.
