For Spring, 2013 there are 3 Essay assignments.

Essay 1: Sense of Place--Experience and Education

Prepare by reading Chapter 1, 2 and 3 from this short book of essays by John Dewey about experience and education, the chapter by Marjorie Stoneman Douglas from the Colloquium reader, and the chapter by Richard Louv. Then compose your essay.

    • Reflect upon your own education and childhood experiences in both formal (schooling) and non-formal (scouting, religious or cultural organization, family, experience) settings.
    • First, think about your education as it relates to the readings we have done up to this point, and to what you have learned in your university courses.  What have been the most important influences in your education?  School?  Church?  Television and the Internet?  Who has shaped your education?
    • Write a brief reflective essay of 500 words minimum on important educational events and/or ideas in your life.  Using specific references or citations from the readings, select ideas to which you can relate in terms of your overall educational experiences.  Connect the philosophical ideas to examples from your experience in general.  How have these educational experiences been part of the shaping of your worldview?  This is more than a recounting; it is an opportunity to consider your educational experiences in light of the ideas presented in the readings.
    • Students will be graded using the current colloquium writing rubric.
