Objectives:
Describe the steps of the Abdomen assessment.
Recognize the normal parameters and common variations of the Abdomen assessment.
Systematically perform an Abdomen assessment.
Document the Abdomen assessment in an acceptable format.

Readings, Assignments, and Lab

  • Bring: Textbook, workbook, stethescope.
  • Reading: Seidel Chapters 8 & 16
  • Workbook: Chapter 16 - both anoatomy review exercises; Chapter 8 - anatomy review.
  • Define: node, lymphadenitis, biopsy, lymphedema, peritonitis, peritoneal irritation, rebound tenderness.
  • Video: Abdomen.
  • Interactive Challenge: Abdomen.
  • Practice: Assessment of the abdomen; Assessment of the lymphatic system.
  • Crossover to Clinical Practice: Assess abdomen and lymphatics on lab partner or assigned client. Perform and document assessments of all other systems.
  • Document: Findings on flow sheet and in a narrative note
