Objectives:
Describe common cultural beliefs about health.
Discuss health beliefs that are unique to various cultures.
Describe psychosocial factors that should be considered while performing a health assessment.
Describe developmental factors that should be considered while performing a health assessment.

Technology Skills:
1. Complete the FGCU Technology Self-Assessment
2. Activate an email account if you do not already have one.
3. Complete the WORD
4. Send an email to D. Wolf with a Word document attachment that contains your name and previous experience in patient assessment. (short paragraph).

Readings, Assignments, and Lab

  • Bring: Stethoscope, textbook, workbook.
  • Reading: Seidel et al. Chapters 1, 2, 3, & 4; Chapter 24 - pp. 873-878
  • Workbook: Chapters 1, 2, & 4
  • Define: allopathic, complementary, alternative, culture, cultural competency, confidentiality, intelligent repose, ethnocentricity, chief complaint, cognition, communication, mini-mental.
  • Video: The Health History.
  • Practice: Taking a cultural history; Taking a health history;
  • In Lab: Assessment of culture & history.
  • Document: Findings on flow sheet and in a narrative note.
