Service-learning is an educational experience designed to encourage civic responsibility and to meet mutually identified community and university needs. Whether integrated into the curriculum or accomplished through independent projects, service-learning is an experiential and reflective activity that increases knowledge and skills and contributes to personal and career growth. |

Service-Learning Opportunities- Demers section
Mulloch Creek Basin Florida Friendly Demonstration plots (maintenance and report)
- 3-5 students for 5-10 hours –
- there are two demonstration plots in San Carlos Park, one at the Drew House and another beside a canal near the golf course that need some general maintenance including weeding, trimming, fluffing and laying mulch, remaining time could be used to pickup (sorted) trash in the canals (by boat) and roads of San Carlos Park
- Select a team leader to coordinate with community partner (Dr Nora Demers, San Carlos Park Civic Association representative 590-7211) to identify goals, desired outcomes and articulate learning outcomes for team participants.
- Select a mutually agreeable 3-5 hour work day for the demonstration plots
- Arrange for delivery of mulch from Lee County (will have learn how to acquire the mulch, and have it delivered no more than 1 week prior to scheduled work day).
- Solicit donations of loan or acquisition of 2 pitchforks for mulch transport (I suggest contacting the Sunshine Ace Hardware on 41 in San Carlos Park)
- Be sure you have drinking water, gloves and tools for the work day (perhaps solicit donations for other refreshments). (Coordinate with Demers to locate these items)
- Digitally record the work day progress
- Prepare a report for the Community partners that
- documents growth and survival of different species of plants
- recommends specific replacement plants to enhance the aesthetic and functionality of the plots for enhancing wildlife habitat (mostly birds and butterflies)
- identify sources for acquisition of replacement plants (Native plant societies and/or local commercial nurseries)
Happehatchee Center Support
Happehatchee’s main focus is to establish and operate an educational and environmental conference center to achieve charitable aims.
- 5-15 students for up to 10 hours – The Happehatchee Center is along the banks of the Estero River in Estero (corner of 41 and Corkscrew Road)
- Select a team leader to coordinate with community partner (Ellen Peterson 992-5455) to identify goals, desired outcomes and articulate learning outcomes for team participants.
- Select mutually agreeable 3-5 hour works days for the support efforts
- Team leader will determine work list in consultation with the Center Director Ellen Peterson.
- Work will include general yard maintenance such as digging up air potatoes, weeding around the labyrinth and organic garden, lawn mowing, trash pickup
- Other work includes an evening campfire, making a child’s play area, resealing the floor on the yoga center, repairing the swing bridge across the Estero River, etc.
- Be sure you have drinking water, gloves and tools for the work days (perhaps solicit donations for other refreshments). (Coordinate with Demers and Peterson to locate these items)
- Digitally record the work day progress
- Prepare a report for the Community partner that
- documents service-learning goals and results
- recommends specific assignments and strategies for future work groups
FGCU Vampire Walk -Commence a coordinated effort to document and report the after-hours use of lights on the FGCU campus
- 3-5 students for 5-10 hours
- Select a team leader to coordinate with community Partner (Kathleen Crawford FGCU Environmental Health and Safety Department 590-1507) to identify goals, desired outcomes and articulate learning outcomes for team participants
- Set up a schedule for team members to conduct regular walks on the FGCU grounds throughout the semester (main campus, and housing) to record and document light use after dark.
- Prepare a public record of the activity- this may include youtube, blogs, webpage
- Prepare a report for the Community partner that
- documents service-learning goals and results
- recommends specific assignments and strategies for future work groups to function more effectively
FGCU Self guided Campus Sustainability Tour –create a self-guided campus Sustainability Tour for FGCU
- 3-5 students for 5-10 hours
- Select a team leader to coordinate with community Partner (Kathleen Crawford FGCU Environmental Health and Safety Department 590-1507) to identify goals, desired outcomes and articulate learning outcomes for team participants
- Set up a work plan for team members to assign tasks complete with deadlines and specific deliverables for each member.
- Prepare a public record of the activity- this may include youtube, blogs, webpage
- Prepare a report for the Community partner that
- documents service-learning goals and results
- recommends specific assignments and strategies for future work groups to function more effectively
Ride2FGCU video production
- 2-3 students 5-10 hours
- Select a team leader to coordinate with community Partner (Kathleen Crawford FGCU Environmental Health and Safety Department 590-1507) to identify goals, desired outcomes and articulate learning outcomes for team participants
- Set up a work plan for team members to assign tasks complete with deadlines and specific deliverables for each member.
- Produce and create a quality video to promote ridesharing and the Ride2FGCU program. The finished product will be under three minutes. The video will be played on the campus shuttles, youtube, and on social media outlets like facebook and twitter
FGCU Freshman Orientation game production
- 2-3 students 5-10 hours
- Select a team leader to coordinate with community Partner (Patricia Rice A&S Advising 590-7196 and Kathleen Crawford FGCU Environmental Health and Safety Department 590-1507) to identify goals, desired outcomes and articulate learning outcomes for team participants
- Set up a work plan for team members to assign tasks complete with deadlines and specific deliverables for each member.
- Produce, create and test a game introducing FGCU Freshman to their community. The game would be used during freshman orientation and should not take longer than 10-15 minutes.
