Folder

 

Used as a metaphor in windows or Macintosh to depict a directory.

 

HTML

 

Hyper Text Markup Language. Page description language used to format web pages. Allows pictures and text to be combined to create Web documents, and the most important feature - hypertext - making it possible for links to be made between different documents.

 

Hypermedia

 

Web pages that contain sounds, animations, and video as well as text and graphics.

 

Hypertext

 

A collection of documents containing cross-referenced links, which allow a user to move easily from one document to another.

 

Internet

When spelled with a lower case i, it is a group of two or more networks connected together.

With a capital I, it is the collection of all the interconnected networks in the world, and is often simply referred to as the 'net'.

 

Link

 

A clickable area on the web page that will connect the client to another file on the Internet.

 

Path

 

Specification of a file (or directory) location listed from top down and separates levels with the / or \ symbol.

 

Permission

 

An access privilege (e.g. read, write, execute) associated with a file or directory. Depending on the operating system, each file may have different permissions for different kinds of access and different users or groups of users.

 

Protocol

 

An agreed upon way of doing things. Method by which computers communicate to each other over the Internet in order to provide a service.

 

Recourses

 

File available on the Internet. It can be a graphic, text, video or sound file.

 

Save

 

Writing a file to permanent storage media from temporary storage called memory.

 

Save As

 

Used the first time you write a file to permanent storage media. This choice that is found off the File menu allows the user to specify the name of the file and the location of the file.

 

Server

 

The computer that makes files available to clients.

 

Upload

 

Sending information to a remote computer.

 

URL

 

Uniform Resource Locator. Internet addressing scheme which allows users to find resources on the Internet.

 

Web Site

 

A page or group of inter-linking pages posted on the World Wide Web. Usually a combination of text and graphics. Pages within a site often contain sounds, animations, and video as well as text and pictures.
