Language Sample Assessment

Due Date March 25
Students will prepare a thorough analysis of a Language Sample Assessment. Students will take an audio language sample from an ESOL student using sequence cards as a prompt or any other activity that will elicit language. The sample needs to be transcribed exactly as the student speaks (verbatim). A thorough analysis of the language sample findings must be included. An action plan to correct possible language difficulties must also be included. Plan materials and activities for the language weaknesses, assess the experience and write a reflection on the process and its implications for teaching.

 

 

  1. Audiotape the activity
  2. Transcribe the complete language sample including unintelligible utterances (verbatim)
  3. Analyze audiotaped and transcribed data. Look for --
    • aspects related to phonology, morphology, semantics, syntax and the effect on students meaningful communication
    • use of semantics categories to assign meanings
    • structure of sentences
    • linguistics interferences
    • contrast of L1 and L2
    • use of slangs, idiomatic expressions, others
    • establish if the word meaning is closely related to how concepts are represented in the mind
    • communication strategies uses
    • level of language proficiency (BICS/CALP)
    • others
  4. Plan materials and activities especially to teach word meaning for a concept
  5. Assess the experience, reflect on the process and its implications for teaching
