Objectives:
Describe the steps of the thorax and lung assessment.
Recognize the normal parameters and common variations of the thorax and lung assessment.
Systematically perform a thorax and lung assessment.
Document the thorax and lung assessment in an acceptable format.

Readings, Assignments, and Lab

  • Bring: Stethoscope, textbook, workbook
  • Need in Lab: Centimeter ruler
  • Readings: Seidel Chapter 12
  • Workbook: Chapter 12 - anatomy review, concepts application
  • Define: eupnea, apnea,vesicular, bronchovesiculr, crackles, wheeze, rhonchi,dyspnea, Kushmaul respiration, cheyne stokes, orthopnea
  • Videos: Chest& Lungs
  • Interactive Challenge: Chest and Lungs.
  • Practice: Assessment of the lungs & thorax.
  • Document: Findings on flow sheet and in a narrative note.
  • Crossover to Clinical Practice: Take a history, assess heart, blood vessels, chest, lungs, skin, hair, and nails on lab partner &/or assigned client.
