Laboratory Practice I: The Skin

Study these skin disorders prior to lab. During lab you will use photographs provided to identify each skin disorder. During lab, you will also use the downloadable Skin Answer Sheet to describe the cause and treatment and label each as contagious (C) or non-contagious (N).

O. Scabies

 

O. Raised, roughened, pigmented area common in the elderly.

O. Some over –the-counter therapies, electrodesiccation or cryosurgery.

P. Impetigo

 

P. Pediculus humanis (parasite). Intense itching and scratch marks in hair.

P. Topical antifungal cream.

Q. Candidiasis of skin

 

Q. Human papilloma virus

Q. Immunization against this infection will cause marked decrease in incidence.

R. Verruca vulgaris (warts)

 

R. Fungal infection or thrush appearance depends on location. Lesions are common in moist areas.

R. Systemic and topical antibiotics.

S. Seborrheic keratosis

 

S. Rash usually generalized with a history of drug ingestion. May occur at any time during the course of drug therapy. May occur in persons who previously took that drug.

S. No treatment necessary.
