Navigation can be broken up into to categories: 
1.  Navigation of a screen
2.  Navigation between screens

Navigation of a screen can be broken down into the following bullet points.

• Assist in navigation through a screen by alignment of elements, groupings of elements, and line borders.
• Through focus and emphasis, sequentially, direct attention to items that are important, secondary or peripheral.
• Tab through screen elements to insure logical navigation order.

• Locate command buttons at the end of the tab ordering sequence.

Navigation between screens is an important topic because if users have a difficult time getting from one screen to another, they will become frustrated with the user interface.  Screen navigation should try to mimic work flow order, so that it appears to be logical to the user.  The user interface needs to be flexible enough to support various approaches since users will perform certain functions in different order.
