Module 10

Semiotics versus cognitive information processing

Semiotics addresses the transfer of meaning. By focusing on the sign system, semioticians are more concerned with the meaning that is constructed by the sender and receiver of communication, as well as how meaning is formed in all contexts.

Cognitive Information Processing addresses the transfer of information.  The CIP model assumes that "facts" or "information" exists in the world and it simply needs to be moved from on vessl (a teachers head) into another vessel (the students head).

The post-structuralists argue that any conveyance has as many meanings as there are senders and receivers.  These meanings remain attached to the network of equivalencies (SIGN SYSTEMS) being used.  This has tremendous implications for education.
