1. Validation-Definitions and Philosophical Underpinnings:

Department of Nursing faculty believe there are credit earning methods that confirm student learning and achievement of nursing knowledge, skills, and competencies. These beliefs embody the spirit of a student focused university.

Validation of essential nursing knowledge, values and competencies may be determined through a variety of specially designed, curriculum specific assessment methods. Department of Nursing faculty are expert judges for validating essential knowledge, skills, and competencies required for baccalaureate nursing practice.


2. Validation Procedures:

  1. Visit Course Web site and select the link "Credit by Validation." This site provides the following information: validation procedures; validation criteria; course resources; contact person with e-mail link; feedback survey; and samples of typical assessment materials (e.g. case study, short answer and multiple choice questions; practicum assessment; scholarly papers, etc.)

  2. Register for course(s) the semester you are planning to earn credit by validation. The validation assessment may be taken at any time during the semester. You are encouraged however to complete the validation assessment prior to end of add-drop period so additional classes may be added if you successfully earn credit through validating the course.

  3. Contact your Faculty Advisor, 941-590-7508, to inform of your intent to validate and to determine if you meet specified validation criteria. (Include names and e-mail links to all DON Faculty here)

  4. Contact course instructor to make arrangements to earn credit by validation.

3. Validation Criteria:

    NUR 3067C Health Assessment: Basis for Professional Practice
  • Admission to FGCU BSN program
  • Licensed RN in the State of Florida or approval from Academic Advisor and Course Instructor


4. Validation Requirements:

  • Pass validation assessment exam with score of 74 or higher.
  • Pass validation assessment practicum with score of 74 or higher.


5. Guidelines for Grade Determination for Validation Assessment:

  • A letter score of "C" or higher must be earned on each Validation Assessment. The score you earn is your final course grade and is entered on your transcript at the conclusion of the semester.

  • If you earn less than a letter score of "C" on the validation assessment, you will complete the course as registered. In this circumstance, the validation assessment score is not used in calculation of your final course grade.

7. Sample Assessment:

Validation Assessment Exam

  • 5 multiple choice questions
  • 5 fill-in questions
  • 5 short answer questions

Validation Practicum Exam:

  • Demonstrate health history and partial health assessment on client.
  • Demonstrate documentation of findings.
  • The practicum exam will be scheduled after passing the Validation Assessment Exam with a score of 74 or higher. The Validation Practicum exam will take approximately one hour. The student is responsible for: scheduling a time with the course instructor to take the practicum exam; bringing all necessary assessment equipment to the exam; and bringing a person to perform the health assessment on.
