Course Description

Key aspects of health assessment for culturally diverse groups of children, adults, and elders are comprehensively examined and practiced in classroom and laboratory settings. Assessment outcomes lead to developing a prioritized plan for client directed care. The construct of health promotion and concepts of health, healing, empowerment, and environment are quintessential components of the course. This course is addressed from a holistic, health-focused approach.


Prerequisites

BSC 1085C Anatomy & Physiology I and BSC 1086C Anatomy & Physiology II OR any Human Anatomy & Physiology I & II with Lab

NUR 3123 Physiological Responses to Alterations in Health may be either a Prerequisite OR

a Corequisite to NUR 3067C Health Assessment: Basis for Professional Practice.


Course Objectives

  1. Achieve self learning goals.
  2. Demonstrate history taking and health assessment skills on clients of various ages, genders, and cultures within community settings.
  3. Discriminate between normal and abnormal findings at conclusion of data collection.
  4. Examine data to differentiate between nursing, medical, and collaborative problems.
  5. Extrapolate key data from a focused assessment.
  6. Incorporate health promotion concepts into nursing practice.

Use of Web-based Bulletin Board

A web-based bulletin board is being used in NUR 3067C Health Assessment: Basis for Professional Practice as an extension of classroom discussion and group work. It is an ideal way to share ideas quickly, get everyone's input, and obtain multiple perspectives. In NUR 3067C, the bulletin board will be used to:

  1. facilitate discussion of class-related topics
  2. share information and resources
  3. provide feedback regarding course projects
  4. post assignments for critique
  5. answer questions regarding homework and exams
  6. facilitate the formation of individual study groups.

Instructions:

Access the Class bulletin board on a weekly basis. Information regarding class-related assignments using the bulletin board will be distributed in class.


Guidelines for Determining Grades

A philosophical underpinning of this course is that using a variety of evaluation techniques enable students to be successful in the course.

50% of course evaluation is based on faculty choice and will include: 2 quizzes

Practicum exam (health history and health assessment)

50% of course evaluation is based on student choice of evaluation method in collaboration with course faculty and may include (but is not limited to) case studies, paper, peer and self evaluation, demonstration of assessment skills, video-taped health history.

You will coordinate the time and location of the practicum with your NUR 3067C Lab Instructor. The exam will take approximately 1-1 _ hours. You are responsible for bringing in an individual to conduct the health history/health examination on.
