Taking Notes

Listen for key words, don't write everything down.

Listen for clue words such as:
"To sum up..."
"The three reasons are..."
"To conclude..."

If it goes on the board, WRITE IT DOWN!!

Make up your own shorthand:
-Drop middle letters
 ex. Continued = con't

-Drop endings
 ex. October = Oct.

-Use symbols for words
 ex. With = w/

Date every page you write.

Why Can't I Learn?

Try these tips to improve your handwriting skills:

Practice writing movements with your fingers.  This means it's OK to doodle.

Use the correct posture.  Sit up straight, use one hand to write and one hand to hold the page.

Keep your paper straight.

Hold your pen or pencil the right way.

Practice writing using stencils.  Ask your teacher to borrow some.

Try tracing letters that are already written.

Do Dot-to-Dot's.

Always use lined paper.

Copy words from printed books.

Here are some tips to handle writing assignments:

  1. Use a small electronic reminder to remember important assignments or ideas.

  2. Take breaks, 5-10 min. each, but remember to go back to your work.

  3. Tape your ideas on a tape recorder, and type them up later.

  4. Use a Spell Check, Grammar Check, or a Franklin Speller.

  5. List frequently misspelled words and how they are used.

  6. Make a list of characters or events that you are reading about when they are introduced so it is easier to remember.

  7. Use post-it notes.  They will save you.
