HOME MANAGEMENT

Home management is another management strategy that emphasizes on the child's home environment.  When children are given responsibilities of household chores, they learn that they can be independent.  Some children enjoy helping out around the house, while others feel that it is not their responsibility.  Some remarks that we may hear are, "It's my mom's job!", "It's not my mess!".  These comments are heard all too often in today's society.

It is important for families to reinforce "ownership".  The way in which families deal with management in the house strongly affects the child. In stating comments firmly, yet still being respectful, children are more willing to contribute their time and effort.  If a parent threatens the child by raising his/her voice, the parent only feeds into the child's irresponsibility and has made the situation worse.  Interestingly, Freund and Elardo (1978), observed that children who were given household chores and responsibilities, and were held accountable for the completion of chores, had better  social skills.

Parents should encourage and promote responsibilities upon their children, thus allowing their children to grow into more responsible and sociable individuals that will prove to be an asset to society.
