What is ADD/ADDHD? WHAT IS ATTENTION DEFICIT DISORDER /HYPERACTIVE DISORDER(ADD/ADHD)?
ADD
or ADHD are names for attention deficits. You may be a boy or girl who has a
problem paying attention. Students that have this problem make up about 3 to 5 %
of the student population. Many girls go unnoticed with this problem. For every
four boys with ADD there is one girl.
If
you have ADD you probably find it hard to stay on task. Your mind keeps
“tuning in” and “tuning out”. You probably have a hard time listening
and following directions. Sometimes your mind goes too fast and you make a lot
of mistakes. You can’t seem to sit still or settle down, that is why you are
called hyperactive. You may say things without thinking or speak out of
turn, that is why you are called impulsive. Sometimes you have trouble
keeping things organized and problems studying. This is not unusual for kids
with ADD. There
are different ways to help you be a better student. There are medications and
behavior plans that your teacher and parents can use to help you.
