Module 5 - Part 1, Angel Discussion Board Assignment 1

Due Friday, March 18

"Money Can't Buy Me Love"

"I'll buy you a diamond ring my friend
If it makes you feel all right.
I'll get you anything my friend
If it makes you feel all right.
I don't care too much for money
Money can't buy me love."
- The Beatles (1964)

Why Consumers Consume - Why do YOU consume?

Think about your consumption over the past few weeks. It might be a product; it might be consumption of media. Did you consume something you wanted but didn't need? If so, try to articulate WHY you wanted it. Which of the four factors in Module 5, Part 1 motivated you into consumption? Make sure you give a definition of the factor, so everyone can see how it fits your consumption.

Module 5 - Part 2, Angel Discussion Board Assignment

Due Monday, March 21

"Girls will be boys and boys will be girls,
It's a mixed up, muddled up, shook up world."
- The Kinks (1970)

"Everywhere is
Freaks and hairies
Dykes and fairies
Tell me where is sanity?"
- Ten Years After (1971)

"So never judge a book by its cover
Or who you gonna love by your lover
Love put me wise to her love in disguise
She had the body of Venus
Lord imagine my surprise
Dude looks like a lady"
- Arrowsmith (1987)

The authors of "The Selling of Gender Identity" argue, "What men and women do know, what they have learned, are role-appropriate behaviors (e.g., the attributes or activities that contribute to the image of a successful male executive or a good mother)."

There's no challenge in finding cultural stereotypes in advertising. They're everywhere. But are ads getting better? Are they defying stereotypes? Review the ads you've been exposed to in this course through Module 5. Watch a little TV this weekend. Read a few magazines. Find an example of gender breaking ads.

Post a brief description of the ad (or where it is in the web site). Explain what about the ad defies gender identity.

Module 5 - Part 4, Angel Discussion Board Assignment

Due Monday, March 28

"Holly came from Miami, F.L.A.
Hitch-hiked her way across the USA
Plucked her eyebrows on the way
Shaved her legs and then he was a she
She says, Hey babe
Take a walk on the wild side"
- Lou Reed (1972)

Review the ads you posted for the previous assignment and try to figure out which one (or ones) of the 11 factors influencing consumption the ad speaks to.

Do you agree with your classmates' conclusions about their ads?
