Module 2 - Part 1, Angel Discussion Board Assignment

Due Tuesday, January 18

"Will the Real Slim Shady Please Stand Up?"

Did you get the allusion in the topic? If so, advertisers think they know who you are, how you think and what you buy.

Scary, isn't it.

If you didn't get that allusion, how about this one.

"Who are you? Who? Who? Who? Who?"

Ah, an old fart like me (or else a fan of "CSI".) Don't understand them young folk with their weird gestures and dirty lyrics? Don't worry, the message in the songs is the same. So are the dirty words. It's just that "our" dirty songs didn't get played on TV or the radio.

So, who ARE you?

How would you characterize your different cultures?

Module 2 - Part 2, Angel Discussion Board Assignment

Due Thursday, January 20

Darkness of Greed

"Ya cram ya culture down my throat
Say I'm inferior when I find that I choke
Ya fill my mind with a false sense of history
And then you wonder why I have no identity?"
Rage Against the Machine

Reread the article "The Other Parent" from the Readings and read "Shaping Cultural Tastes."

Think about the three parts to this question. Is there a "dominant culture" around you? Describe it. Where do you think it comes from? If your classmates describe a different dominant culture, why is it different?

Module 2 - Part 3, Angel Discussion Board Assignment 1

Due Monday, January 24

A Gansta' Bedtime Story

"(Uncle Snoop Dogg.)
Yo' whassup, whassup.
(Could you read us a bedtime story?)
Alright, alright.
Ya'll get my ash tray, get my lighter.
I'm a read ya'll a gangsta bedtime story.
Come here, sit on my lap. (Okay.)
Check it out."

Snoop Dogg

Both Morrow and Steyer talk about TV as a storyteller. But there can be more than one storyteller in our lives.

After you've read these articles and thought about your dominant and your personal culture, who were your storytellers? What cultural campfires did you learn from?

Module 2 - Part 3, Angel Discussion Board Assignment 2

Due Friday, January 28

"A Reggae Music, mek we chant down Babylon
With music, mek we chant down Babylon
This music, mek we chant down Babylon"
Bob Marley

Part 3 of Module 2 is very important because it starts us thinking about the larger world around us - the "cultural" world. One point is that "Culture Defines, Divides, and Unites".

After you have completed Part 3 of Module 2, give an example from your own experience of how culture has defined, divided, or united you.

Media Diary and Analysis (5% of grade)

Due Tuesday, February 1

Detailed instructions will be posted on the Angel Discussion Board and will be e-mailed to you.

Download and print out this Media Diary. You will have to print or copy it several times.

Part 1
Begin by estimating the amount of media you consume in 2 days. Then keep a 48 hour "Media Diary."

Part 2
Write a narrative that explains your perceptions about your media consumption as well as the overall diary experience.

Attach your narrative in the Media Diary Drop Box. Either attach your diary sheets or land mail them to me postmarked no later than September 13. Make a copy of your diary before mailing it. Every semester, one gets lost in the mail and causes much wailing and gnashing of teeth for the student.
