Prerequisites: MAC 1147 with a passing grade

Topics: PHY 2053C is an introduction to mechanics, waves, and thermodynamics. It is designed to be taken as a sequence with PHY 2054C. The course will cover a subset of chapters 1-15 in the textbook. A tentative sequence of the materials covered and the exams is as follows: chapter 1-4, Exam I; chapter 5-8, Exam II; chapter 9-12, Exam III; chapter 13-15, Exam IV. A more detailed tentative schedule can be found later in this syllabus.

Lectures and Lecture Material: During the lecture part of our class meetings, we will discuss the topics and concepts covered in your readings. It is important that you read the assigned chapters in the textbook before you come to class. Please, don't expect us to just read the textbook to you! A very brief outline of the topics that were covered in class can be found on the class web page.

Laboratory: The laboratory is an integral part of this class. Failure to complete and hand in all laboratory assignments will result in an automatic F for the course. The laboratory will contribute ~15% to your final grade, and you must pass the laboratory to pass the class! Formal, word- processed Laboratory Reports have to be handed in at the time specified in the syllabus. Hand-written Lab Reports will not be accepted! If you hand in your Lab Report late, there will be an automatic deduction of 15 points (out of a maximum of 100 points) for every day (including weekends) your report is late.

Your Laboratory Report is due at Turnitin.com at midnight PRECEEDING the due date listed in the Schedule. Failure to do so will deduct 15 points from the Laboratory grade.

Turnitin.com: We will be utilizing Turnitin.com for this class. Our class ID is: 1570419 and the password is: newton

Disclaimer: Students agree by taking this course that all required papers may be subject to submission for textual similarity review to Turnitin.com for the detection of plagiarism. All submitted papers will be included as source documents in the Turnitin.com reference database solely for the purpose of detecting plagiarism of such papers. Use of the Turnitin.com service is subject to the Terms and Conditions of Use posted on the Turnitin.com site.

Homework: Homework will account for ~18% of your final grade. I encourage you to work the homework problems in small groups. However, simply copying the answer from somebody else is not considered working together and will be treated accordingly! Most of your homework will be submitted electronically, but in addition you will receive worksheets or assignments from the textbook. I expect you to be able to solve and to explain all of the homework problems on the board. The portion of the homework that is not submitted electronically is to be handed in on neat and readable 8.5x11'' paper. Unreadable assignments will receive no credit. You can find additional information about the electronic homework service at: https://hw.utexas.edu/

Exams, and Quizzes: There will be four in class exams, each lasting for about 1h. Each will account for ~10% of your final grade. These exams will mainly focus on the material covered since the previous exam, however, some of it might build on previous material. There will also be a comprehensive Final Exam (~22%). In addition to the exams there will also be short quizzes that are mainly conceptual in nature (multiple choice, and/or short, free response). The quizzes and your in class participation will account for ~5% of your final grade. Please, note that there will be no make up exams or quizzes. You are required to bring a working calculator to each class meeting. Sharing of calculators during exams or quizzes is not allowed. Students with a programmable calculator are not allowed to program formulae or other material related to the class into their calculator. I will provide you with a formula sheet for each exam.

Grades: Here is a summary of the different components that will contribute to your final grade:

Area Grade
Laboratory 15%
Homework 18%
Quizzes 5%
4 In-class Exams 40%
Final Exam 22%
