Welcome to the Science of Aging web site!

In Gerontology 6613 you will learn about the scientific aspects and theories of aging. You should have taken GEY 5005 as a prerequisite to this course or will need permission from the instructor to enroll. This course is required for the Gerontology Certificate Program.
I will be sending you videotape during the semester that you must return your final grade will be posted. If you have problems using technology after completing the technology orientation in Module 1, you should contact our Web Master Tony Burkett at tburkett@fgcu.edu or by phone at 941-590-7500.

If you have course-related questions contact me, Dr. Linda Buettner, at lbuettne@fgcu.edu or by phone at 941-590-7497. I will be online or near my phone during office hours (Mon. 10am - 12:30pm or Wed. 2-4pm) if you want to email, chat, or phone me. I will be starting a major Alzheimer's research grant project this semester in the community and will not be on campus on Tuesday or Thursday. You can speak with my secretary Trish Smith (941-590-7495) if you need immediate assistance on those days.

Now, a little about the Science of Aging... This course is designed to help you:
* Gain a better understanding of the biological and physiological aspects of aging;
* Work more effectively with older adult clients, regardless of your profession;
* Prepare you and your family for a positive aging experience through preventive health strategies.

Each week you will have reading assignments and web based research to do before you complete each Module's Study Questions. These are to be emailed to me on Sunday no later than midnight and posted on the WebBoard by 9am on Monday morning. No late Readings will be accepted. There will be one exam in the middle of the semester. It is an open book exam, and you will have one week to complete the questions and return it to me.

The biggest project for the semester will involve selecting a topic related to conditions and biological experiences of older adults. For example, if you are interested in Parkinson's disease you will research the known science of this condition in relation to the normal aging brain and write a Focus paper on the topic. At the end of the semester you will present the information in language that non-scientists will understand. The presentation will be done in PowerPoint software and the audience will be a group of older adults. The Science of Aging class will provide the audience with a Mini-Conference that will be hosted by our class.

Start thinking about an area that you are interested in and that would be interesting to older adults in SW Florida. I will approve topics within a month. Use the links to any of the course information or activities. The course material may seem overwhelming at first, but you will get the hang of things soon. I am available to help you at any time. Please call, email, or stop in during my office hours if you have any questions or problems. I am happy to give you one-on-one assistance on the use of the PowerPoint software and help you start your presentation at any time.

Have a great semester!
