Buddy Systems

Buddy Systems describe peer learning and communication that takes place in education.  Sawgrass Elementary School has adopted the motto that "Students help students, allowing students to help themselves".  When paired, children share strengths and balance out weaknesses.  Younger children benefit from the experience and personal attention of older children.  Children of the same age collaborate ideas and different perspectives.  Students make global connections when involved in a pen-pal system.  Peer education is enjoyable for students and has far-reaching effects on learning.

  Peer Studying Tips

(For Parents when using Buddy Systems at Home)

  1. Location- find a place that's free of distractions
  2. Time- allow enough time for children to share ideas and complete shared work
  3. Help- students should feel free to ask family members for extra help when needed
  4. Notes- encourage children to journal ideas and things learned when working with a buddy
  5. Energy- have children eat snacks, exercise, and have rest before study periods begin
  6. Listen- remind children to listen to each others thoughts
  7. Read- have children practice buddy reading to each other
  8. Creativity- let children be as free with creativity as they want to be
  9. Practice- children can test each other's knowledge in the way of review
  10. Friends- correct pairings are as important as the material being covered
