Welcome to the Products & Services for Older Adults web site!

Thank you for taking a leap into a different kind of learning. I know that each of you in your school careers have encountered many teachers who use a traditional method of lecture and discussion. In this internet course you will still have the opportunity to listen and talk. However, class instruction will be delivered via a web-based format.

One thing that I believe to be an added benefit is that you no longer need to take lecture notes. Instead of listening to a lecture, I will write all your notes. All you need to do is to read them!

Class discussions will take place through the use of a bulletin board, chat room and e-mail. There will be homework assignments and projects. One of the biggest benefits of a class of this nature is that you will be able to work at your leisure and convenience.

One of the challenges as the instructor for a Internet course is for the student to really understand the older adult population and dispel the myths of aging. This kind of sensitivity cannot be learned from books, but only through face-to-face contact and through student-teacher relationship. In order to serve the aging population, the student needs to be aware of their uniqueness.

I hope that our relationship over the Internet will facilitate that keenness and sense of understanding. The first module of the course includes a technology orientation to help you become comfortable with the technology skills necessary for success in this course. There is a lot of information to digest in one sitting. Please refer to the technology session as often as needed.

After the first module, please refer to the readings and schedule to guide you throughout the semester. You can reach me by email at smaxwell@fgcu.edu. You can reach me at my home phone 941.267.6952.

If you have problems using technology after completing the technology orientation in Module 1, you should contact our Web Master Tony Burkett at tburkett@fgcu.edu or by phone at 941.590.7500.

I am looking forward to a great semester as we both learn about how to better serve the older adult population.
