Getting acquainted ...

Hi there!  I am Dr. Ginger Patterson and we are about to embark on a unique experience.  For many of you, this may be your first class done on the Internet.  We will not be seeing each other face to face but we will certainly get to know each other over the next few weeks.  Because this course is done in six weeks we are going to have to assume that you are familiar with your computer, know how to post on our web board, and know how to send attachments through e-mail.  If you feel weak in any of these areas might a suggest a crash course with someone since your first assignments are due Thursday, May 17.  Please note that all weekly assignments are due by Thursday at 9 A.M.

Because this course last only six weeks, it is highly recommended that you do not take other courses with it (unless you have a lot of free time).  Please read through the Course Evaluation carefully.  If there are any questions, please ask them now so that there are no misunderstandings about assignments and grading.

If you bought your text used, make sure you received the diet analysis disk.  If not, you will not be able to complete your project.

I will start this off so that you know a little about my background and what I do. I am an adjunct professor here at the university, which means I do not work here full time. I spend two and a half days a week at Fitness On The Move in Ft. Myers.  Most of my time is spent dealing with weight management, but I also counsel people on eating better, preventing and dealing with heart disease, and being a better athlete.  The weight management program I conduct was written by me and follows closely everything you will learn this semester.  It is a lifestyle program that deals with exercise, as well as, eating and eating behaviors.  I am also the Nutrition Director for Exercise Etc, an education company that provides continuing education programs for fitness professionals and fellow dietitians.  These seminars are given on the week-ends all over the country, so I get to do a lot of traveling.

And, in my spare time, I make almost all of the clothes that I wear and make quilts.  I love to cook and bake and love to eat as well.  My husband and I live in the country (Alva).  We are both into healthy eating and exercise.  We run together (he runs better and faster) and also do strength training.  Travelling is something else we enjoy doing.  Some of the places we have been the past couple of years: Egypt, Israel Italy, Paris, and Greece. In this country we have visited most states, rafted the Colorado River down the Grand Canyon, and visited a dude ranch in Phoenix.

I went to college when my kids did – different colleges, thank goodness.  I really enjoy being a registered dietitian, and feel that a nutrition course should give you not only information to pass exams, but give you information you can use to become a more fit and healthy person.  I hope you are going to feel free to provide feedback if ever you feel this course is not giving you what you feel it should or is not meeting your expectations in any way.

There are a few things that will make this semester better for both of us:

  1. DO NOT SEND MORE THAN ONE ATTACHMENT TO AN EMAIL.  This forms a zip file which I cannot open.
  2. IT IS EASIER IF YOU DO THE QUIZ AND CASE STUDY IN THE SAME DOCUMENT.  NAME THE DOCUMENT FOR THE MODULE AND ADD YOUR LAST NAME (Mod1Patterson).
  3. DO NOT SEND A VIRUS.  Make sure your virus software is up to date.  I lost a hard drive 2 semesters ago.
I will always strive to respond to your work as quickly as I can, but because of my work schedules there may be times when that is slower than I would have wished.

Now, sit back, take a deep breath, and relax.  We are in this together.  .  I have always looked at new things in life as challenges that will lead to knowing more about something than I knew before.  Just think how good we will all be on the computer when this is over!  Let’s keep in mind the primary objective, learning about nutrition and wellness.
