Laboratory Practice II: The Skin
Study these skin disorders prior to lab. During lab you will use photographs provided to identify each skin disorder. During lab, you will also use the downloadable Skin Answer Sheet to describe the cause and treatment and label each as contagious (C) or non-contagious (N).

G. Allergic drug reaction. |
G. Occurs on sun-exposed skin. May present as an ulcer, flat red area, cutaneous horn, hyperkeratotic papule or nodule. May infiltrate surrounding structures and metastasize to lymph nodes. |
G. No cure although Acyclovir may reduce viral shedding and hasten healing. |

H. Herpes zoster (Shingles) |
H. Variety of dermatophytes (fungi) |
H. Topical ointments to dry lesions and sooth, topical or systemic corticosteroids. |

I. Vitiligo |
I. An absence of melanocytes causing white patches. May be associated with neurofibromatosis. |
I. No treatment. |

J. Contact dermatitis |
J. Found on buttocks of dark-skinned infants. Resolve by age three. |
J. Antifungal creams and solutions. |

K. Tinea (ringworm) K1. corporis K2.capitis K3. peids K4. versicolor |
K. Streptococcus A. Pruritic vesicle or pustule that breaks and leaves a honey-colored crust. |
K. Pediculicide shampoo and a fine-toothed comb to remove nits. Clothing and linens washed and dried in hot temperatures. |

L. Mongolian spots |
L. Deadliest form of skin cancer cancer of melanocytes. Incidence is rapidly rising. Seen most commonly in people taking short sunny vacations with intense sun exposure. |
L. Scabicides with retreatment in a week. Clothing and linens washed and dried in hot temperatures. |

M. Hives |
M. Sarcoptes scabiei (parasite). Multiple straight or wavy thread-like lines beneath skin, itching. |
M. Substance causing reaction usually needs to be stopped. Antihistamines will reduce itchiness. Epinephrine or cortosteroids may be needed in severe reactions. |

N. Head lice |
N. Allergic reaction to a drug, blood, x-ray contrast dye. |
N. No treatment. They are not caused by abuse. Never implicate parents with this! |
