Environmental Education & Literacy in the University |
Guidelines: You will be writing a two part paper of 4-6 pages in length.
Part One:
Dewey,
in Experience & Education (Dewey, 1945, p. 47) speaks
of "mis-educative experiences"
that require "unlearning"
in later life. Meanwhile, Orr refers to "mis-educative experiences"
when he observes that "all education is environmental education"
(Orr, 1992, p. 90) and that people learn and acquire values from these
experiences that will result in values of "carelessness" or
"stewardship." Present some examples of what you believe
to "mis-educative" (ineffective) and "educative" (effective)
environmental education and justify your assertions. In other words what,
in your opinion, characterizes effective environmental education?
Part Two:
Based
upon Orr's essay "The
Liberal Arts, the Campus and the Biosphere," what sort or environmental
education or education for sustainability do you think is appropriate
in higher education? Furthermore, thinking of our own university
and your own course of study, what suggestions would you make in order
to meet the learning outcome of ecological literacy?
Part Three:
Thinking
of Florida Gulf Coast University, your own College, and your particular
course of study and major, what suggestions would you make in order to
meet the learning outcome of ecological literacy?
