Module 8
Principles of Psychological Development
Basic Assumptions
Human Intelligence develops through interaction with the world; therefore from social interaction and experience.
(1) Signalization: Humans and animals learn from interacting with their environment. Gazelles associate lions with danger, children associate stoves with pain.
(2) Humans have symbols: tying a knot as a reminder- new connection is developed between the symbol (knot) and the activity to be completed; humans have constructed the process of memorizing by reaching beyond the given or biological to create a new structure.
(3) Signification: Process of assigning meaning to the knot, allows human to master own memory (Messenger's wands in Australia) .
(4) Culture: the use of arbitrary or self generated stimuli to convey meaning is start of culture. "The importance of these symbol systems is that their creation and use bring about behavioral and psychological transformations leading to the development of complex mental processes in the human species.
