The adoption of personal goals is an effective strategy in all settings to increase a number of desireable behavior. Specifically, goal setting is known to:
- increase self-regulatory behavior
- motivate individuals to move in particular directions
- lead to greater self-efficacy
It is important that individuals set their own goals. When set by the learner, goals are:
- more likely to be followed
- more likely to be accomplished
Researchers have found that goals must be realistically attainable. When goals are set that are not attainable, they may lead to:
- depression
- increased anxiety
- increased stress
