• Semiotics is a communication theory built on medieval thinking about signs.
• Reflections on the role of signs in structuring experience and revealing nature and culture to our understanding (Deely)
• The quasi-necessary, or formal, doctrine of signs (Pierce)
• Semiotics lies at the intersection of nature and culture (Sebeok): think back to Vygotsky and his notions about the role of culture.  He may have been something of a semiotician without knowing it.
