Promoting Cognitions that Motivate

1) Teachers should encourage students to focus more on learning goals than performance goals

2) Instruction should help students see value in learning subject matter

3) Students should find classroom material interesting as well as informative

4) Teachers should attribute students’ successes to both stable and unstable internal factors, and their failures to unstable and controllable internal factors

5) Students should feel they have some self-determination with respect to classroom events

6) Feedback and other forms of extrinsic reinforcement should communicate information rather than decreasing student’s sense of control

7) Most classroom activities should be noncompetitive in nature

8) Students must feel competent about classroom activties and have high expectations for success

9) Teachers should encourage students to take on challenges and risks
