Paragonimus westermani
Paragonimus westermani. Adult
worm (carmine stain, scanning power). This small, robust trematode, known as
the Oriental lung fluke, lives encapsulated in the lungs of humans and other
animals. It usually measures 7.5 to 12 mm long by 3 to 5 mm in thickness. The
bright red-staining testes are relatively large and branched, lying side by
side, posterior to the larger, red-staining, branched ovary. The uterus takes
a golden color in the center of the worm and contains many small, brown-staining
eggs. The reddish-staining yolk glands occupy the lateral fields, extending
from the anterior to the posterior extremities, filling in toward the center
of the worm.
