Plasmodium falciparum
Platelets. Cluster of platelets in thin
blood smear (Giemsa's stain, oil immersion). The cluster of platelets seen in
this blood smear were originally interpreted by an inexperienced worker to be
perhaps a malaria schizont. However, these platelets are not within an erythrocyte
nor do they have the morphologic features of merozoites of any species of malaria.
