Teams
of three to six students, listed below, conducted local or regional
sustainability analyses. They used environmental indicators to evaluate
progress on such issues as growth management of communities, Everglades
restoration, or regional impacts of global warming. These real-life
projects, not only expanded their understanding of local environmental
concerns, but also prepared them for future collaborative work.
The results of these
team analyses can be reviewed through the Powerpoint presentation (available
in Adobe Acrobat Reader format) and a paper (available in MS Word format)
that each team presented to the class:

Downtown
Fort Myers, Florida
Current growth projections coupled with poor resource management
has Fort Myers on a potentially unsustainable course. By evaluating
key indicators within the downtown area, and plotting them against
previous years totals, we can determine if Fort Myers is on a
sustainable path, or if changes must be made.

Kissimmee
River in Florida
This project examines the background and history of the Kissimmee
River before it was channelized. We will examine why the Army
Corps of Engineers changed the river and look for specific factors
such as flood control from hurricaines and one hundred year storms
and the availability of the drinking water supply. Other reasons
that are explored are economic and social factors. Next, we offer
reasons behind the decision to restore the natural flow of the
river and how this project links to the Everglades Restoration
Project.
