Project Objectives (3 or 4): Related to Course Objectives
and Purpose

-
Reflective Journalizing about Service Learning experiences
The following opportunity is suggested as a graded Project
of Choice for up to 15 hours of Service Learning:
Lee County Pulling Together Study Circles
-
Lee County Pulling Together Study Circles is a community
initiative to improve race relations in Lee County.
-
Toward this end, a call for action or advertisement is published
in local nespapers, asking interested citizens to participate. Interested
persons meet at a "Get Acquainted" potluck dinner (on October 17 this year).
Study Circles of 10 or so people are formed (based partly on location &
dates for meetings). Five 2-hour Study Circle meetings lead by a trained
facilitator are held at agreed-upon times and place. There is well planned
'curriculum' topics for discussion. The discussions are confidential. A
Wrap-Up is held on November 18.
-
You may participate with one other Community Partnered Care
student in a Study Circle (not more than 2 Community Partnered Care students
in one Study Circle) or you may participate alone.
-
This Service Learning Opportunity is being offered to students
in other courses, so there may be other FGCU students in a Study Circle.
-
Remember, the purpose of Lee County Pulling Together and
the Study Circles is the betterment of race relations. Discussions may
challenge values and beliefs.
-
If this project is selected, you will be expected to follow
through to completion: Participate in Potluck dinner, five Study Circles,
and Wrap-Up.
-
Not all details have been worked out. This is a new adventure
and a wonderful opportunity to put into practice tenants of community partnerships
and community based learning.
