Annotated Bibliography

Books:

1)      Wailoo, Keith & Pemberton, Stephan (2006) The Troubled Dream of Genetic Testing. The Johns Hopkins University Press, Baltimore.

This book is focused directly on genetic testing, with an entire chapter directly about genetic testing in relation to Cystic Fibrosis. It seems to be a great source for my topic.

2) Reilly, Philip (2006) The Strongest Boy in the World. Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory Press, New York.

This book has information on Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis, as well as other forms of Genetic Testing, and has some ethical points behind doing these tests. I plan on using this source as a tool for more information on the different genetic tests available.

Articles

1)      Geddes, Linda. (2006). New embryo test cuts disease risk. NewScientist. P. 12

This article explains briefly what PGD is, and it explains postives and negatives for performing this type of test on embryo’s. It explains how the testing can determine the chances of diseases and other factors for the baby.

2)      Motluk, Alison. (2005). Which IVF test is right for baby. NewScientist. P. 10

The article explains the risks of performing this type of genetic testing at such an early stage of development. There is also debate over what cell to remove, and this article discusses that a little bit.

Internet

1)      Marrik, JJ. (April 13, 2005) Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis. Retrieved January 31, 2007, from http://www.emedicine.com/med/topic3520.htm.

2)      This site has the history of this form of genetic testing. It also has a definition, statistics, tables, and controversies behind the testing. This will be very useful because is has a great deal of information that I’ll need.

3)      Silber, Sherman J. Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis: General information on PGD. Retrieved January 31, 2007 from http://www.infertile.com/treatmnt/treats/pgd.htm

This site offers a good deal of a breakdown of what PGD is, as well as including pictures, and just basic detailed information for my topic.
