Hi everyone! Welcome to HSA 3117! This is your first
module where we begin to understand, dissect and learn
about the principles of Health Service Administration. If
you are having any problems to this point with technology
or orientation to the website and course outline, please
contact me. We are going to be tackling assignments and
readings aggressively for the next 10 weeks, so get
ready....get set....go.
Based upon the prerequisites for the course, all of
you should be familiar with basic management techniques.
The first chapter of your readings from the class
textbook is entitled "The Dynamic World of Healthcare".
The objective of this reading is to review basic
knowledge of the health care system from a management
perspective. Resources such as money, people, physical
infrastructure, and technology are discussed. The second
part of the chapter deals with the organizations in
healthcare, again, this is review.
The second reading introduces us to the management
process and roles of managers in health service
administration. Organizational management issues such as
culture, philosophy, and stakeholders are reviewed. The
highlight of these readings should be an introduction to
the management model for health service organization. The
input-conversion-output model is described in detail and
set into external healthcare environments. Environmental
factors that are external to the organization are
discussed from a systems perspective. This refers to the
effect on the entire system due to an external factor.
Picture the HSO as links on a chain, one event is
connected to another to produce a strong effect.
Most of this should be review, if you are having
problems with the material, please contact me.
Pay special attention to the two sections entitled
"The Dynamic World of Healthcare". These are found on
pages 11 and 23. In the first one, "Is Anybody Happy With
Our Healthcare System?", notice the main point of the
article. This is the fact that even though our spending
per person on medical care is the highest in the United
States (about 2500$/person in 1992), our citizens are the
least satisfied with their healthcare. Why do you think
this juxtaposition exists? The second article focuses on
the huge steps our country has made in healthcare with
the advent of technology. Control of infectious disease,
gene therapy, and artificial organs are only a few of the
ways we have developed to control death and disease. How
does this article relate to the first one dealing with
satisfaction? Would we have had these same advances
without the increased cost? Why are people not satisfied
with the first country in the world to control TB? Think
about it....
That
is it for notes for module #2! Let me know if you have
any questions.
