The following is a summary of the main points and topics to
review in preparation for the midterm exam. Review all lecture notes
and readings assigned to module #2, #3, #4, #5. The list below
includes "highlights" from the modules and does not represent "only"
what is to be covered on the exam.
GRADING AND
EVALUATION
The exam will be accessible to students
from Monday, June 12th (6/12/00) until Friday, June, 16th (6/16/00).
Please ensure the exam is completed and returned to the
instructor by 6/16/00 at 5:00pm.
The exam is worth 20 points total toward your final grade. It will
be composed of a combination of short answer, essay questions and
some multiple choice. Essay questions will be evaluated based upon
content, format, and grammar. Please ensure that your exams are
typewritten, 12 point font, double spaced without spelling errors.
The exam will be counted off 10% per day of lateness if returned
after the due date, this includes exams received after 5pm on
6/16/00.
Module #2: Introduction to the US Health
Services System
- Define health, healthcare services, and the
healthcare system and identify the determinants of
health
- Identify and understand the basic building blocks
of the healthcare system (money, people, physical
infrastructure, and technology)
- Identify competencies needed by health
professionals in the changing world of
healthcare.
- Identify the different types of organizations in
the healthcare system
- Be able to discuss the management process,
management functions, and roles of healthcare
administrators.
- Understand and be able to discuss all components
of the management model for HSOs.

Module #3: Financing, Regulation and
Provision of Healthcare
- Review the history of the health care system in
the United States highlighting trends in morbidity and
mortality, social welfare, federal initiatives,
workforce and comparable health care systems.
- Apply HSO model of management to this chapter
using environmental forces that are discussed.
- Understand the current structure of the US
healthcare system.
- Define types of HSOs in the US by level of care
provided, ownership, and "for profit" vs.
"not-for-profit".
- Define education criteria for a health service
administrator.
- Review and understand major state and federal
regulatory guidelines for HSOs
- Describe sources and funds for healthcare and
define DRGs and RBRVs.
- Define and state the significance of UR, PSROs,
and PROs.

Module #4: The Profession of Health Service
Administrator
- Define management and understand its dual aspects
as a science and an art
- Model the management process
- Understand the roles of and interactions among
first-, middle-, and senior-level managers in
healthcare organizations
- Understand the work of managers in terms of
functions, skills, and roles
- Understand the work of managers in terms of a
"trinity" of roles: organization strategist, designer,
and leader
- Fully appreciate the relationship between
management and organizational performance
- Review history of the profession of healthcare
administrator
- Understand educational preparation of a healthcare
administrator
- Review code of ethics as provided by the ACHE for
healthcare administration

Module #5: Healthcare
Professions
- Understand the importance of organizational design
in healthcare organization and appreciate its
historical roots in the thinking of early management
theorists
- Distinguish between formal and informal aspects of
organizational design
- Understand the advantages and disadvantages, and
the implications for managers, of the division of
work
- Understand the basic staffing process in
healthcare organizations
- Understand the nature of informal relationships
among people in organizations
- Review the personnel who make up the healthcare
workforce by place of employment and occupation
- List trends in healthcare workforce employment by
setting
- Review physician education and training as well as
physician workforce issues
- Understand roles of allied health personnel and
trends within this workforce
