TOPICS FOR MODULE 8

Principles of Health Services Administration

Health care rationing is a concept that continues to return to the forefront of "new" cost control measures. Rationing involves selecting, on some basis, those who will have access to health care services and those who will not. There are those who favor rationing by age, some who favor rationing by disease and those who favor rationing by income (unfortunately, this is what we currently have in the United States). The article linked below is a good review of health care rationing and includes perspectives from other countries. Remember that health care policy is primarily dictated by the citizens' values and public opinion which vary from country to country. Read the article linked below and answer the following questions:

Health Care Rationing
  1. What are you thoughts on healthcare rationing? Do you agree or disagree with the concept?
  2. What type of rationing would you support in the United States? What are the other alternatives (as you see it) if you do not support rationing?
  3. How do you feel about rationing in other countries?

Once you have gathered your thoughts, please post your response on the bulletin board prior to 5pm on Friday, June 30rd. Also, you are responsible for responding to the postings of other students. All students must participate in the student webboard discussion for the week before the deadline to receive credit for participation. This will make it necessary for you to visit the bulletin board several times during the course of the week. Your participation grade will depend on the quality of your initial responses as well as your interaction and responses to the postings made by other students. Remember there is opportunity for extra credit points, but you must not only answer the topic questions, but provide added insight based on additional review of topic.
