"Research is endlessly seductive; writing is hard work. One has to sit down on that chair and think and transform thought into readable, conservative, interesting sentences that both make sense and make the reader turn the page. It is laborious, slow, often painful, sometimes agony. It means rearrangement, revision, adding, cutting, rewriting. But it brings a sense of excitement, almost a rapture; a moment on Olympus. In short, it is an act of creation." Barbara Tuchman |

"Writing is easy. All you do is stare at a blank sheet of paper until drops of blood form on your forehead."

HIS 4104, Historical Epistemology, introduces the student to the study of history throughout time (historiography) and the practice or methods of history. It is an exit requirement for all history concentration majors at Florida Gulf Coast University, but is open to any student wanting to learn more about the history of and theory of history.
The class will be conducted in seminar style and students must attend each session, participate in the assignments and discussions, ask questions, actively participate as required, and critically critique the conclusions and works of their peers and other historians. Students will utilize a portion of the semester to prepare themselves for the second exit requirement, the pro-seminar, in examining the writing of history and proper citation and bibliographical methods. Students will continue to learn about the interpretation of primary source materials. Students must also contribute to the Florida Gulf Coast University Southwest Florida Oral History Project through class projects that involve oral interviewing and web creation techniques and practices.
