Lawrence W. Schafer, Interviewee

Jason M. Cobb, Interviewer

Mr. Schafer took up the fight for the conservation of Estero Bay because of the economical and ecological problems he foresaw in "The Estuaries" development project that would affect his shrimping business and the natural marine life of the bay.

"The Esturaries" development project would have called for the drainage, filling, and overall destruction of the Estero Bay in order to build a large condominium living area.

Born and raised in Florida, Mr. Schafer has witnessed the destruction of several natural estuaries and bays in and around the state. He has, on several occasions, devoted his personal time and resources to conservation movements.

During my interview with Mr. Schafer, he recalled the connectedness that his conservationist group felt in combating the developers and the stern opposition that they presented. A small group of roughly ten individuals who held claim, both personal and professional, to the natural waterways of Estero Bay was able to thwart the multi-million dollar project.

Though hounded by low ball tactics, such as physical intimidation and threatened lawsuits, they were still able to express their viewpoints effectively enough to hold off the opposition.

Mr. Schafer commented to me that he was indeed pleased with the results of their crusade.

"Dolphins at play in Estero Bay"

During the conservationists fight for Estero Bay, Mr. Schafer noted that the 'inland' people, those living in the city of Fort Myers, were indifferent to the project, and this caused him some concern.

He believes strongly that there will be a perpetual conflict between conservationists and developers of waterfront property, natural bays, and estuaries in our state, and that people need to become sensitized to the issues of ecology and environment to understand fully the impact that such projects have.

At 76, Mr. Schafer is now retired. He has recently sold his shrimping business and resides on Fort Myers Beach, just a stone's throw from the back bay that he helped to protect many years ago.

Here is an overview of what the Estero/Fort Myers area looks like today - note the natural contours of the Estero Bay (thanks to Mr. Schafer and friends).
