STUDY ACTIVITY 8.1

  1. What age do you want to live to? Do you think you will make it? What factors discussed in the texts and in this unit do you believe will assist you? What factors will be your downfall? Explain why for each factor.

  2. If people know that certain factors may be beneficial to living a longer and healthier life, what do you think keeps them from changing?

  3. Answer the above questions for yourself. Then ask the same questions of two other people: one young adult and one older adult. Do the answers differ and how?

STUDY ACTIVITY 8.2: Identify some examples of how people in American culture alter their appearance, socially and physically, to appear younger.  Discuss the pros and cons of accepting normal age changes vs. altering fate through science such as in taking HRT (hormone replacement therapy). Describe the social impact of a youth-oriented culture on the so-called normal process of getting old.
