GEY 6613 The Science of Aging

 Module 7 Study Questions
Activity:  Sleep/Wake Cycle, Sexuality

STUDY ACTIVITY 7.1: Describe an elder who is having trouble sleeping. Read the chart on page 247 of F & F text: Methods To Improve Sleep Habits. Describe the method you would use to assist the elder to alter sleep habits. Take into consideration such issues as memory, learning, motivation, lifestyle, etc.

STUDY ACTIVITY 7.2: The F & F text lists several stereotypes related to sexuality:

  • "Sexuality is reserved for the young."
  • "Elders' sexual needs are amusing or insignificant."
  • "Older people don't enjoy sex. If they do, it's abnormal".
  • "Sexual ability is lost with age."

Contemplate asking your parents or grandparents about their beliefs and practices of sexual activity. How do you react to this suggestion? Which one of the above myths fits you? Perhaps you have a different reason; please elaborate.

Find at least one older adult you can talk to and discuss his/her attitudes and practices about sexuality. Has the person experienced stereotypical myths of sexuality in aging?
