 Module 10 Study Questions
Acute Illness in Later Life

STUDY ACTIVITY 10.1: Often, elders refuse to use assistive devices like wheelchairs and canes because of their ego and not wanting others to know they have a problem or disability. Describe some examples of ways to convince them otherwise. If you were in the manufacturing business think of some ways you could design assistive devices so elders that need them would be willing to use them.

STUDY ACTIVITY 10.2: Compile a list describing ways a community could decrease the incidence of accidents among elders. (Look at all aspects of their life!)

STUDY ACTIVITY 10.3: Discuss the impact institutionalization would have on the incidence of acute illness? Would the incidence be different between a mentally competent and incompetent elder, and why?
