APPENDIX CXVI. Canopy structure: Hurricane Recovery Plot
Time is the months after the hurricane. API is the Average Pioneer Index. Canopy layers are designated at height intervals (meters): 0-1 (herb), 1-4 (shrub), 4-12 (subcanopy), 12-20 (canopy), 20-30 (surviving). Average height (m) is calculated from the maximum height interval at each sampling point. H' (Shannon Index) is calculated from counts for each of the five layers. Foliage density (percent) is calculated by dividing the total number of vegetation touches, by the total number possible.
