Life After High School:  

Vocational rehabilitation ensures that all students, who require services,  receive  them in a timely manner. 

It is important that we:

·        prevent student drop out

·        ensure no gaps between school and work

·        ensure that students realize their potential

·        help students work in integrated settings

 

The transition team:

·        provides criteria and assists in identifying needs

·        considers referrals and provides evaluation

·        designate vocational counselors

·        provides individualized services

·        responds to school on student’s progress

·        involves and empowers parents and students to advocate their interests

 

The services:

·        linkage for school based and adult based services

·        career and life counseling

·        functional assessment

·        development of work habits, attitudes, and behaviors

·        development of daily living skills

 

Who is eligible?

·        students with physical, mental, or emotional disabilities

·        disability must be impediment to employment

·        the student must be able to benefit in terms of employment

·        student must be between the ages of 16 and 22

 

How do I access Vocational Rehabilitation (VR)?

·        local office:  941 – 278 – 7150

·        ask to speak to transition counselor

·        invite counselor to individualized educational plan (IEP)

 

Steps to employment:

·        testing and evaluation for eligibility

·        vocational goal is developed

·        plan of services is developed

·        plan of services is implemented and services are provided

·        employability skills

·        placement services

 

Finding the students interest: done through testing, inventories, and interviews

·        vocational testing

·        hobbies

·        work experience

·        education

·        likes and dislikes

 

Finding the students aptitudes:

·        vocational evaluation

·        world of work inventory

·        general aptitude test battery

·        military testing

 

Choices:

·        On the Job training

·        work adjustment training

·        short term job coaching

·        supported employment

·        hi-tech centers

·        college

 

 

Vocational Rehabilitation is a unique program that provides trained professionals to help our students move from the school setting into the work setting.  There is no cost to the individual.  They are part of the a Florida Division of the  Department of Labor and Employment.
