VISUAL PERCEPTION

Visual discrimination – the ability to see the differences between two similar objects.  For example this student may have difficulty distinguishing between the letter m and n.

Visual sequencing – the ability to put things in order visually.  This student loses place easily, has problems with reading, reverses or misreads numbers or letters.

Visual figure ground – the ability to pick out an object from a background.  Your child may have difficulty finding hidden pictures, picking one line of print from another while reading.

Visual closure – the ability to recognize an object when the entire object is not visible.  This student may have difficulty recognizing a picture of someone with a facial feature covered.

Object recognition – the ability to visually recognize objects which are familiar to them.  This student will have difficulty recognizing letters, numbers, symbols and words.

Strategies – In general give directions orally, use color coding.  Reading – use enlarged print, use an index card to block out distracting print, allow student to follow along with a finger when reading.  Writing – paper with darker lines, Math – divide paper into large distinct sections for working out problems, clearly space words/problems on a page.

Assessments – Developmental Test of Visual Perception-2, Motor-Free Visual Perception Test, Developmental Test of Visual-Motor Integration
