| First,
the Stanford-Binet Intelligence Scale is appropriate for ages 2 – adult
and consists of 15 subtests that assess verbal reasoning, abstract/visual
reasoning, quantitative reasoning, short-term memory. Second, the Wechsler
Intelligence Scale for Children (3rd ed.) (WISC-III) provides an
overall estimate of a student’s current global intellectual performance
and consists of 13 subtests. Third, the Tests of Cognitive Ability of the
Woodcock-Johnson Psycho-Educational Battery-Revised provides information on
overall intellectual functioning and description of specific abilities. This
test consists of 21 cognitive ability tests and is able to contrast expected
and actual achievement. Fourth, the Kaufman Assessment Battery for Children
(K-ABC) is appropriate for ages 2 and a half to 12 and a half. This test
also measures aptitude and achievement. For more information regarding this
test, visit this website for the Psychological Assessment Resources, Inc.

A fifth example of an individual test of intellectual performance is the
Kaufman Adolescent & Adult Intelligence Test (KAIT), which is
appropriate for ages 11 to 85+. This test measures only intelligence (not
achievement).
Some intelligence tests are "nonverbal," meaning that they do not rely on a child’s ability to comprehend and use language, to assess that child’s intelligence. Three examples of these types of intelligence tests are the Raven Progressive Matrices, the Leiter International Performance Scale, and the Test of Nonverbal Intelligence (2nd ed.) There are other tests available to measure a specific ability. Two examples of these tests are the Illinois Test of Psycholinguistic Abilities (ITPA) and the Detroit Tests of Learning Aptitude (3rd ed.) (DTLA-3).
