The most important thing to remember is that every exceptional child has a right to a free appropriate public education.

If your child has a disability, lives in Florida, is between ages three and twenty-one, and has not graduated from high school, he/she is entitled to receive educational services beginning with pre-kindergarten classes.

If your child is eligible for a special education program, this means many things.

1.   The special program with have teaching, special material and other needed educational services

2.   The program must be appropriate-set up to meet the needs of your child as agreed upon by you and the school

3.   The program must be free of charge to you.

If your child is under the age of 3, there may be a program or other special him or her. Some local school districts have services for younger children, such as programs for infants and toddlers. (Services may also be available through the Florida Department of Children and Family Services)

Transition services are available for students with exceptionalities who are age 16 or older. These services will help your child as he/she gets ready to move from school to adult life. There are also free or low-cost special programs and services outside the school system.

Other Important Parts of the Law

Decisions about your child must be made after an individual evaluation
The program for your child must be described in writing. This written description is called and individual education plan or IEP.
Decisions about your child must be made with you and in a way that is fair. This is called due process.
